Phivolcs records 129 quakes, ground deformation on Mt. Bulusan

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvolcs) on 2 July reported 129 volcanic earthquakes in Mt. Bulusan in the last 24 hours, according to its 5 a.m. bulletin.,The bureau also observed ground deformation on the volcano where its edifice is inflated.,There were also 556 tonnes of sulfur dioxide with moderate plume emissions of 150 meters tall on the northwest and west-northwest drift.,Alert Level 1 is still in effect in the vicinity of the volcano.,PHIVOLCS reminded local government units and the public that entry into the 4-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone radius is prohibited and surveillance should be carried out in the 2-kilometer Extended Danger Zone due to the rising possibility of a sudden and dangerous phreatic eruption.,Phivolcs urged civil aviation authorities to caution pilots to avoid flying near the peak of the volcano since ash from a rapid phreatic eruption can be dangerous to aircraft.,“People living within valleys and along river/stream channels especially on the southeast, southwest and northwest sector of the edifice should be vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows and lahars in the event of heavy and prolonged rainfall should a phreatic eruption occur,” it added.
